PSN name FAQ

How can I change my PSN name?

If you’re not happy with your current PSN ID, there are several options for changing it. First, you can simply log into your account on playstation.com and click on your profile in the top-right corner, then nativage to the Profile section and hit the Edit button next to Online ID at the top. From there, you’ll be able to switch to a new valid name. Alternatively, you can change it on a PlayStation console by going into your account settings there. Once again, this will take you to a screen where you’ll be able to swap to a new online name.

Can I change my PSN name for free?

Changing your PlayStation Network online ID is free the very first time you change it on your account. After that, further changes will cost $9.99 (or $4.99 for PlayStation Plus subscribers), so it pays to think carefully about your PSN name — try to pick something that will age well, and something that doesn’t give away any personal information about yourself.

What is a PSN name?

Your PSN name is your online handle used on any supported console on the PlayStation Network. Your PlayStation Network ID tracks games you play, play time for each game, trophies you unlock, and more. A PSN name can be used to sign in and play on any and all supported devices, so you only need one, no matter how many of those supported systems you want to play on.

How can I find an available PSN name?

Simply type the name you’d like to look up in the box on the PSN Name Checker. The search result will tell you if it is already in use or if it is available, and will also flag up PSN IDs that may be deemed unsuitable by Sony (one that uses offensive language, for instance). Once you’ve found a name that you like and that is available, head over to playstation.com to set yourself up with a fresh PSN account and claim it, or log into an existing account if you’re looking to change your PSN name.

What is a valid PSN name?

In order for a PSN ID to be valid, it must be at least three characters long but no more than 16 characters long. It needs to start with a letter, and the only permitted special characters are underscores and hyphens. In addition, words and terms deemed offensive may not be allowed — your PlayStation Network name is publicly visible, so you should try to avoid anything that could cause offense to others anyway.
